Lean On Me

Have you ever tried to stand a stick on edge? Before you turn the page and wander off to see what everyone else did last Sunday, humour me. The other day I had the wonderful opportunity to do absolutely nothing. So, there I sat, letting my mind drift, while trying to stand up a pencil on end. Sort of like having one stick standing on edge. Years ago, when bored with the teacher, I used to try to stand a pencil up on the end. Most times, it can’t be done no matter what you do. Then I had opportunity to have a pen that became my favourite. This pen, even though it was heavy on one side due to the pocket clip, could stand if you held you mouth it in the right way.
Without driving it into the surface you have it on, it only works occasionally. Give it a try. By the way, pencils work better then pens. Got it? Now that you have conquered this, move onto two sticks or two pencils. This is exactly what we did while sitting around the campfire. We would even do it to start fires.
Start with a few sticks leaning on or over each other. Pour on some gasoline then light it up. Just kidding. You would never see that on Survivor. Hypnotized by the flame we would entertain ourselves by leaning two sticks together to see if they could stand on their own. Driving them into the dirt was cheating. When it failed, we threw them in the fire and picked up two more. This would go on for a while.
Again, bored with that we would add the third dimension or should I say the third stick. And so it went. We add one more and one more and one more. The more you added the easier it gets. After a while, a Bill Withers song would start traveling through our minds.
Sometimes in our lives we all have painWe all have sorrowBut if we are wiseWe know that there's always tomorrow
Lean on me, when you're not strong
And I'll be your friend
I'll help you carry on
For it won't be long
'Til I'm gonna need
Somebody to lean on

Please swallow your pride
If I have things you need to borrow
For no one can fill those of your needs
That you don't let show

If there is a load you have to bear
That you can't carry
I'm right up the roadI'll share your load
If you just call me

So just call on me brother, when you need a hand
We all need somebody to lean on
I just might have a problem that you'd understand
We all need somebody to lean on
Lean on me...
There will be times when it is difficult to go on our own. We need someone to lean on. How wonderful that God in His wisdom did not just give us each other to lean on but He became the third dimension when together, we lean on Him. Start a fire with Him and let His fire burn in us.
